What is RSS?
The College of Education has released RSS feeds for some of the regularly changing content on the site. You can subscribe to these feeds and receive these updates in your feed reader. But what is an RSS feed and how do you take advantage of it?
What is RSS?
RSS stands for Rich Site Summary. It was developed for web content providers to be able to 'push' (or 'feed') content to past visitors without the hassles of email. One advantage of an RSS feed is to be able to stay informed of updates to a site you are interested in without having to visit the site on a regular basis.
How do I use an RSS feed?
A user that is interested in taking advantage of a site's RSS feed would need to do two things.
- Get an RSS reader
There are a variety of RSS readers ranging from novice to advanced features. Some popular readers are Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers1.
- Subscribe to a feed
The usual method to subscribe to a feed is to click on the RSS feed icon (
) and then add the feed address to your feed reader. However, this method does change based on your particular reader.
