GA Position Description

Overview

The Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education is seeking a Graduate Assistant for the Center of Educational Development and Research (CEDaR).The candidate should be a graduate student in the College of Education and be in good standing with their program of study. The candidate should have expertise in any of the following - program evaluation, specifically evaluation of grant funded research projects, SPSS data entry and data running, and other broad based research skills. This is a 10 hour-per-week (.25 FTE) graduate assistant position for the 2009-10 academic year.

Responsibilities

Although all CEDaR graduate staff maintain a strictly clerical and support role in their work for faculty and students, the responsibility of graduate assistants sometimes overlaps with faculty and the IRB where issues of academic integrity and confidentiality are concerned.Consequently, GA’s are expected to complete the IRB CITI test and sign affidavits of confidentiality for both the office and College.Additionally, GA’s are expected to familiarize themselves with University policies on academic integrity.

Due to the wide range of services offered by CEDaR, graduate assistants are expected to take initiative and quickly learn new skill sets in order to meet the demands of the client base.Successful candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to respond effectively to faculty and graduate students regarding their needs for a variety of services including, but not limited to, academic editing, survey design, transcription, graphic design, D2L, technical troubleshooting, poster design and printing, electronic research, program evaluation, and grant writing.Graduate assistants must also self-instruct and present hands-on workshops in quantitative and qualitative data analysis software (i.e. – SPSS, NVivo), survey design software (i.e. – Survey Monkey) and citation software (i.e. – EndNote). Some knowledge of MS Office Suite 2007, Adobe Photoshop CS3 and InDesign is also preferred.

Research and Travel Funds - Students - Summer & Fall 2009

The College's Research Committee has limited support money for Doctoral Graduate Students who may need assistance with conducting research or presenting at a conference. The following guidelines should be used in constructing your request:

  1. Travel related to research or performance presentations will be given priority for funding because of limited amounts of money.  In a cover letter, make sure to CLARIFY the nature of your travel...i.e. a research presentation.
  2. You must submit a detailed budget followed with a narrative.  Please keep in mind we have limited funds and we encourage you to conserve funds as best as possible (e.g., roommates instead of a single room).
  3. If you are submitting a request for research support, you must submit a copy of the IRB approval letter (this includes funding to support your dissertation research).
  4. Provide a copy of a letter of support from a faculty member or faculty advisor.
  5. Provide a copy of your letter of acceptance for the conference (or a copy of your presentation in the conference catalog).
  6. Submit these application materials to Dr. Hardré in the Dean's Office by October 1 for Summer and Fall semester awards.
  7. Graduate students are limited to one travel award in an academic year (example: Summer 2008 - Spring 2009).

Traditionally the total amount of research/travel requests exceeds our budget.  The Research Committee makes every attempt to equitably distribute funds.  Other sources of funding include the Graduate Student Senate, Graduate College and your department.  There are limitations on how money awarded can be used.  For example, funds can be used for per diem for travel but cannot be used for food for research subjects.  Also, we cannot fund class projects.

The Committee will review applications and make awards in November for Summer and Fall requests.  Requests may be made after the deadline as long as money lasts. If you have any questions, e-mail Dr. Hardré at hardre@ou.edu or contact your faculty departmental representative.

The Graduate College has made improvements to their website

In an effort to assist our current graduate students, we have created two new sections on the Funding Opportunities page of our website. http://gradweb.ou.edu/Funding/index.asp. The pages are under construction.

  • Travel and Research Grants: a central location where current graduate students can find available sources of funding from their department, college, Graduate Student Senate, and the Robberson Travel and Research Grants. If you're interested, submit the attached Request to Post TR Funding on GC Website form to the Graduate College.
  • Graduate Assistantships: this page is dedicated to publicizing new GAship openings within academic departments. Note: the Graduate College will not post the actual position information on gradweb.ou.edu but will include a LINK to your the department's website or to a PDF that explains the GAship. Those departments interested in publicizing a GAship on our website must submit the attached Request to Post GA Position on the GC Website form to the Graduate College.

If you would like to include your department's information on the Travel and Research Grants page, please carefully complete the appropriate request form and submit it to the Graduate College via email (gradinfo@ou.edu).

Graduating Graduate Students need to submit Vita

The College of Education Student Tracking, Assessment and Retention Committee (CoE-STAR) is asking that all graduating graduate students submit to appropriate departmental staff a vita (resume) prior to graduation.

Please place your vita in an envelope and send that to your Graduate Programs Officer in your department.  This process will occur every Fall and Spring semester for graduating graduate students only.

If you need additional information please contact me at hardre@ou.edu.

I appreciate your assistance!
