  1. What is the full admission essay supposed to be about?"

    Submitted by: Student Services

The essay for full admission should discuss why you want to teach in the area you have selected. Specifically, it should list any attributes about you that you feel will be an asset to you in teaching, any experiences you've had that have shaped your desire to teach, and finally, any teachers along the way that have inspired you. Elementary Education majors must submit a packet as prescribed by the Elementary Certification Committee. This process has changed, so be sure to check with your adviser for the most current information.

  2. Do I automatically enroll in Education courses after my full admission interview? What if all the courses I need to enroll in are full by the time I get through the interview?

    Submitted by: Student Services

After the interview for full admission, visit the Student Services Center in Collings Hall room 137 to have codes changed on the computer and permissions given for Education courses. Please provide your adviser with the Education courses and section numbers you are ready to enroll in. If you meet the requirements for a particular education course, but it appears to be full, please place yourself on the interest list on the enroll.ou.edu website. You may also contact the Student Services Center for additional information concerning the class.

  3. Why do I have to put my name on an interest list if the Education course I need is full?

    Submitted by: Student Services

The interest lists provide valuable information to the department in determining how to schedule the proper number of classes. This is the method the College uses to accommodate additional students in courses that are closed. Putting your name on the interest list lets your adviser know you need further assistance with your enrollment.

  4. How do I test out of EIPT 3011? When can I test out of EIPT 3011?

    Submitted by: Student Services

EIPT 3011 is a prerequisite for EIPT 3043. If you are able to test out of the course, then it is not necessary to take EIPT 3011. Please watch for e-mails informing you of the dates of testing, or contact the Student Services Center at 325-2238 for information regarding test out. Specifically, the test covers spreadsheets, databases, and file management in both Macintosh and PC platforms. You are eligible to test out whenever the tests are offered once you are fully admitted to the College of Education. Currently the test is offered once in the fall and once in the spring. There are two sessions offered each test date, with limited seating. A study guide is available at http://education.ou.edu/edpy/3011/.

  5. Why are there no dates and times listed on enroll.ou.edu for the lab sections of EDS 3003 & EIPT 3483?

    Submitted by: Student Services

You do not physically attend a lab section for EDS 3003 and EIPT 3483, but you must enroll in a lab to finalize your schedule. The lab sections of EDS 3003 and EIPT 3483 are used as a time management tool for you to make sure time is built into your schedule for completing field experience hours.

  6. What is a Nonwestern Culture class and how do I get a list of the College of Education approved courses?

    Submitted by: Student Services

The University requires all students to take a Non-Western culture class. You must also take an upper division (3000 level or above) Gen Ed approved course outside your major. If you choose carefully, you can meet both requirements by selecting a Non-Western culture course from the list your adviser provides each semester.

  7. When is my next advising appointment? Why do I have to be advised if I already know what I'm going to take?

    Submitted by: Student Services

Group advising sessions will be scheduled each semester approximately one month before advanced registration begins. You will receive an e-mail on your OU account with information regarding this semester's scheduled times. Advising is a necessary component to help insure that you are completing all requirements toward graduation and certification in a timely manner. After group advising, your adviser will lift your advising stop which will allow you to enroll. Your advising session is also an important way to keep up to date on information pertinent to completion of your program.

  9. Are there tests I need to take in order to be certified to teach? When do I take the tests and how do I register for the tests?"

    Submitted by: Student Services

There are three levels of testing required to obtain teaching certification. The OGET (Oklahoma General Education Test), the OSAT (Oklahoma Subject Area Test) which may consist of more than one exam depending on your area of specialization, and the OPTE (Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam). The OGET is generally recommended once you have completed approximately 45 hours of General Education courses with at least a couple of classes in each area. The OSATs are recommended by your adviser on the basis of completion of the subject area coursework that you will be tested on and the OPTE is recommended when you are enrolling in your student teaching semester. To register for these exams, please see your adviser for recommendation. Once recommended, see the certification officer for a testing application. You can register either online or by mailing in the application by the deadline listed on the back of the packet.

  10. What is full admission? How do I get fully admitted? Why can't I enroll in Education courses until after I am fully admitted?"

    Submitted by: Student Services

In order to be fully admitted you must meet the College's specific course requirements and successfully complete the full admission interview process. Please contact your adviser to determine your progress in that process and to have the applicable paperwork filled out. You can make an appointment with your adviser or drop by Student Services to see your adviser (Collings Hall Room 137, 325-2238).

This interview must be successfully completed prior to enrollment in Education courses. The recommended dress for the interview is professional, for example, dress as you would for a day of teaching. No materials are necessary for the interview. However, after you go through the interview and enroll in the Education courses that you can, please contact your adviser with course and section numbers. Your adviser will then contact the office manager who will serve as a liaison between you and the department to aid your adviser and you in getting closed class permission.
