Social Studies Education
Master's Degree
The purpose of the master's program in social studies education is to advance student understanding in social studies teaching and content in elementary and secondary education.
Core (11 hrs minimum)
Studies in Teaching and Learning (3 hrs)
Studies in Cultural Diversity (2-3 hrs)
Research (6 hrs)
Research Synthesis (0-3 hrs)
Concentration (20 hrs minimum)

EDSS 5332 Seminar in Social Studies (2 hrs)
EDSS 5940 Global Education (3 hrs)
EDEL 5502 Elementary/Middle Social Studies Curriculum (3 hrs)
EDSS 4563 G Teaching Secondary School Social Studies (3 hrs)
EDSS 5342 Mentoring in Social Studies (2 hrs)
EDSS 5323 Microteaching in Social Studies (3 hrs)
EDSS 5960 Directed Reading (3 hrs)
EDSS 5910 Practicum in Social Studies (3 hrs)
Social Science/Humanities content (11 hrs)
In consultation with the social studies advisor, the student may select course work from the social sciences or humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences or related education courses. It is expected that the course work throughout the program will provide the student with the necessary foundations to complete a masters level thesis or project.

Social Studies Education
Course work in social studies education such as curriculum, teaching methodology, research, special topics, directed readings, and practicum experiences, as approved by the advisor and committee.
Education and Related Areas
Course work in education and related areas such as developmental theory, learning theory, educational psychology, and curriculum and research.
Content Areas
In consultation with the social studies advisor and committee, the student will select course work from the social sciences or humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Electives (12 hrs maximum)
Dissertation (9 minimum-18 maximum hrs)
