Undergraduate Requirements
Mathematics Education
Master's Degree
The purpose of the masters' program in mathematics education is to promote professional and scholarly growth in students' understanding of mathematics learning and pedagogy from theoretical, research, and practical orientations, as well as to provide leadership for the mathematics education community.
Core (20 hrs minimum)

Studies in Cultural Diversity (2-3 hrs)
Research (6 hrs)
Research Synthesis (0-3 hrs)
Concentration (20 hrs minimum)
Coursework may be taken in mathematics education, mathematics, and related areas according to mathematics education specialization interests. Students will be advised to complete a coherent course of studies with a focus on curriculum, instruction, learning, technology, or educational organization. Coursework in each of these areas is recommended. A minimum of 20 hours is required in mathematics education, mathematics, and related areas.

Courses may be taken in the following areas: social foundations in education; instructional psychology and technology; and educational administration, curriculum, and supervision, as approved by the advisor.
Mathematics content (3-9 hrs)
Students are advised to complete courses to obtain the equivalent of an OU certification in secondary mathematics if their focus is on middle/secondary school mathematics education. Students whose focus is on elementary mathematics education are advised to take mathematics courses throughout two semesters of calculus and 6 hours of graduate mathematics. Courses may be selected from any graduate mathematics courses upon the recommendation and advise of the advisor and in agreement with the student's career objectives.

Education and Related Areas (3-18 hrs)
Courses may be taken in the following areas, as approved by the advisor and committee: social foundations, instructional psychology and technology; and educational administration, curriculum and supervision.
Content Areas (9-18 hrs)
Students are advised to obtain the equivalent of a Masters in Mathematics. Courses may be selected from any graduate mathematics courses upon recommendation and advice of the student's advisor and committee to achieve balance in all areas of applied and theoretical mathematics and agreements with the student's career objectives.
