The purpose of the Instructional Leadership concentration is to provide students with an alternative to other concentrations that is compatible with the interests and expertise of the faculty in the Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum department.

Master’s Degree

Admission Requirements and Required Supporting Documents

  • Baccalaureate degree or the equivalent from an accredited university or college.
  • Admission in full standing requires an earned grade point average of at least a 3.00 through the semester in which the last 60 credit hours of letter-graded undergraduate bachelor’s course work was earned.  An applicant with a 2.80 to a 3.00 grade point average thorough the semester in which the last 60 credit hours of letter-graded undergraduate bachelor’s degree course work at an accredited college or university may qualify for conditional, low grades admission based upon the strength of the supporting documents presented.  A Statement of Conditional Admission (Low Grades) will explicitly outline the first 12 hours of letter-graded graduate course work that the student must take, and the time period for completion of these hours.
  • Submission of a written goal statement briefly discussing the applicant’s background and professional purpose for entering the program.

    Students are required to take a minimum of 9 hours in the Department of Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum, as appropriate to their professional interests and as approved by the advisor.

Electives (11 hrs)
    Students must take a minimum of 11 hours in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum and /or related educational areas, as appropriate to their interests and as approved by the advisor.

Total Core and Concentration Hours: 36

Admission Requirements and Required Supporting Documents

  • Admission in full standing requires an earned grade point average of at least a 3.25 on a 4.0 scale in all graduate work.  
  • Three references submitted by persons who are familiar with your qualifications. Include faculty members with whom you have done graduate work and others who have personal knowledge of your professional experience.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test scores, not older than five years.

  • A brief biography emphasizing your professional career experience.
  • A one page statement of your career objectives.
  • A statement describing why you have chosen your listed major over other specialties.
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts showing both graduate and undergraduate work.
  • In addition to the materials above, Instructional Leadership requires submission of a writing sample, such as a published article or graded graduate level research paper.

    Students are required to take a minimum of 9 hours in the Department of Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum after the masters degree and not including dissertation hours, as appropriate to their professional interests and as approved by the advisor and committee.

Education and Related Areas
    Coursework in education and related areas that support the student's professional goals, such as social foundations, developmental processes and learning theory, curriculum and supervision, and technology, as approved by the advisor and committee.

Content Areas
    In consultation with the advisor and committee, the student may select course work from the various concentrations inside and outside the College of Education that support the student's professional goals.

Dissertation (9 minimum-18 maximum hrs)

Applications cannot be considered until all required materials have been submitted.  The Office of Admissions and Records has charge of all matters pertaining to general admission to the University.  Admission and enrollment in the Graduate College is governed by the Graduate Dean.  A student must be recommended for admission by the Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum department and the Instructional Leadership program concentration.  Prospective students are encourage to consult the Graduate College webpage (www.gradweb.ou.edu) for additional information about admission to graduate programs at the University of Oklahoma.

Additional Information for Prospective Doctoral Students

            A prospective student interested in the Instructional Leadership concentration should meet with the Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum Graduate Liaison to discuss whether the student’s goals are compatible with the concentration.  At this time the Graduate Liaison will suggest that the applicant meet individually with faculty members whose interest and expertise are similar to the student’s goals.  The student should feel comfortable meeting with several faculty members without either having to make a commitment.  In addition, prospective students should indicate in their goals statement possible faculty in the department with whom the student would want to work.  Subsequently an interview with the program faculty to discuss the application and to describe the general structure of the program is required prior to admission into the program.
