Community Counseling Program: Admission Information

The Department of Educational Psychology, College of Education offers a Community Counseling Program of 49 semester hours leading to the Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree. Because counselor training essentially begins at the graduate level, students from various undergraduate academic backgrounds will likely qualify for this program. A doctoral program in Counseling Psychology is also offered by the Department of Educational Psychology within the University of Oklahoma.

In order to receive full consideration in the admissions process, the following information must be received by the Applications Officer, Educational Psychology Department, Collings Hall, Room 321, 820 Van Vleet Oval, Norman, OK, 73019-2041 by the January 31st deadline:

  • Completed Community Counseling Application
  • Copies of all transcripts (these need not be official)
  • Graduate Record Examination Scores (General Exam)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Letter of intent (Letter E in the School Counseling Application)

Incomplete applications will not be considered after the deadline. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Educational Psychology Department at (405) 325-4525 or by e-mail at gpoedpsych@ou.edu at least one week before the deadline to ensure that their department application file is complete.

In addition to the application process described above, it is also necessary that you apply to the GRADUATE COLLEGE OF THE UNIVERSITY. The graduate college requires that you complete their application and provide official transcripts. You may obtain their application package on the above link or by calling (405) 325-3811. You should note that the University Graduate College application takes 4-6 weeks to process after all transcripts and application forms have been received by the Admissions Office. Applicants are encouraged to call the Admissions Office of the university at (405) 325-2251 to check the status of their university application.

Be sure to submit your materials far enough in advance to meet the application deadline. You should also be aware that the Community Counseling Master's Program begins during the summer session each year.

Soon after January 31st, the faculty will review all completed applications and identify applicants to be invited to personal interviews. Final decisions regarding admission will then be made, and the applicants will be notified of their admission status.
