Counseling Psychology Program

The Counseling Programs area of the Department of Educational Psychology offers three distinct but integrated degree programs.  The Counseling Psychology program offers a Ph.D., and has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1988.  Masters degrees are offered in Community Counseling, which prepares students to seek status as Licensed Professional Counselors, and School Counseling, which meets all the requirements for certification in the State of Oklahoma.

Our training model is rather unique and is described as a developmental scientific professional model, which is consistent with the scientist-practitioner tradition.  Students are exposed in an early and continuous manner to the integration of science and practice, which includes extensive hands-on training.  In fact, our students begin working in our on-site, community-based clinic within the first year of their program.

The clinic provides students with the opportunity to learn about and experience the challenge of professional practice with the added security of quality supervision at all times.  The integration of science and practice is enabled through core faculty serving as supervisors for doctoral students in the program, as well as overseeing the supervision of masters students.  All work with clients is videotaped for learning purposes within the clinic.

Another exciting development for students and faculty alike is the creation of a new, state-of-the-art clinic that will be complete in the near future.  This clinic will also be housed on the Norman Campus of the University of Oklahoma, and will allow us serve both the community and our students even more effectively.
